Meet Our Project Manager, Phil McEwan

Phil McEwan - Pool Environments Project Manager

Phil McEwan - Pool Environments Project Manager

Phil McEwan has over 41 years of experience in the pool industry, all of which have been dedicated to the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. From construction, service, electrical and retail, Phil has had his hand in all aspects of the business at some point in his career. Throughout these 41 years, Phil has managed some of the most intricate, complex projects in the industry. He currently serves as the project manager at Pool Environments where he coordinates every detail of the construction of your new pool.

Phil started working on pools in 1971 at the age of 14. In the late 1970′s, he joined Anthony Pools and worked in their construction, service and retail departments. He began selling and designing pools in 1980, and went on to focus exclusively on commercial projects in the late 1980′s. He started his own company in 1995 until about 3 years ago when he went to work for his “biggest competitor,” Pool Environments.

As project manager, Phil plays a vital role on the Pool Environments team. He supervises construction in the field, oversees the crews, decides the best way to build each aspect of the pool, and maintains direct contact with the client and other architects working on the project. When asked what to look for when hiring a company to build your pool, Phil highlights experience, honesty and customer service. “When the client is building a new pool for the first time, there are several things that come up that they may have never thought of – structure, drainage issues, small details. You need someone to help make educated decisions, and we know people have hired us to make the best decisions concerning their pool,” Phil explains. One of the advantages of having 41 years of experience is the opportunity to learn from your mistakes and turn them into great decisions in later projects.

In terms of changes Phil has experienced in the industry over the span of his career, he says standards have definitely progressed, specifically in the safety and energy efficiency categories. “Your pool builder should be in the forefront of this knowledge, especially safety. The Pool Environments team does research constantly and is committed to staying on top of these topics.” Association involvement is also critical to maintaining credible professional standards and collaboration with other industry leaders.

Phil McEwan and Pool Environments are committed to serving our clients, and we look forward to working with you on your next project.

Collin County Water Restrictions

If you are a Collin County resident, chances are you know all about the Stage 3 water restrictions we have experienced since November 1, 2011. Watering your lawns is only permitted once every other week, existing pools are not permitted to be drained and refilled, and establishing new landscaping is highly discouraged. Since the rain in late January and recent wet weather, the North Texas Municipal Water District Board of Directors has decided to keep the Stage 3 water restricitons in place through May 31, 2012 instead of moving to Stage 4 as early as April 1st, 2012.

Although the rain has been a welcome change during the usually dry La Niña weather patterns North Texans have experienced of late, it has not been enough to end the water restrictions. If residents continue to abide by the current restrictions, it is hopeful that Stage 4 restrictions can now be avoided. However, we are certainly not out of the woods yet with the still looming drought conditions across the state and probable long, hot summer that lies ahead. For residents, Stage 4 restrictions would mean no watering of your lawn and vehicle, with the exception of trees and your foundation. Especially important for residents in the process of building a new pool is the ban on permits for private pools. Once Stage 4 water restrictions go into effect you will not be able to receive a permit, but those who have already been permitted will be able to be filled with water. Obviously, this is extremely important if you are considering installing a pool this spring or summer.

Please view pages 13 – 16 in the District’s model for complete details about Stage 3 and Stage 4 water restrictions.

Of course we know a few things about water, but we have found that fire can definitely add another dimension to your pool or water feature design and functionality. Not only do the opposite elements make for a stunning visual effect, you will also find that you are enjoying more cool evenings out by the pool after dinner or while entertaining guests. You could also take the design a step further and include a full outdoor living area – truly creating an extension of your home’s living space. Pool Environment’s in-house designer, Randy Angell, began his career designing custom homes for several local home builders.  His creativity and knowledge of residential design positions Pool Environments in a very unique category of being truly a design/build company, not only for swimming pools, but also structural additions to the home, to create that all-season outdoor environment that you desire. Be sure to click on the photos in our gallery above for inspiring ideas from a few of our past projects here in Dallas, Texas.

If you are simply looking for an outdoor seating area around a fireplace or fire pit, Pool Environments would be happy to assist you with the design process as well. From the initial sketch, we work with you to include materials and style that suit your taste and create another component of your home. In the fireplace section of our website, you will find more examples of sketches and fireplaces we have designed in the area. Whether you are adding on, renovating or starting fresh, pool Environments would welcome the opportunity to be a part of your outdoor living design. Please contact us to discuss your vision and we will begin bringing it to life.

The Art of Koi Pond Care

Pool Environments - Koi Pond

Pool Environments - Koi Pond

Koi ponds can add a unique, exotic element to your outdoor design, but there is a very fine balance in caring for these fish. From the proper design and size, circulation and filtration, to water temperature, there are many elements that affect the ecology of your pond. Koi ponds differ greatly from your typical garden pond and great care must be taken in the building and maintenance to ensure your success in keeping these costly fish healthy. The care of koi ponds is an extensive topic and may seem daunting at the start, but the result can be a tranquil, rewarding experience as you care for these truly unique fish.

In addition to the traditional pool services we offer, Pool Environments has experience in servicing these distinctive ponds to keep your fish thriving and your pond in proper condition. If you already have a koi pond in your outdoor space and have questions about proper care, or if you are interested in installing a koi pond, the designers and service experts at Pool Environments welcome the opportunity to assist you. Please contact us to discuss your koi pond needs.

Ted Anderson on Pool Heaters

When temperatures drop, we tend to receive more inquiries on the topic of pool heaters. To help with your pool maintenance this winter, we sat down with our Director of Client Services, Ted Anderson, to provide you with tips on saving energy during the winter months and the difference between various types of heaters.

First, you will want to determine what your specific needs are in a pool heater. Ted compares this process to looking for a truck – you may need a lighter duty version for occasional light use. Or, you may need a standard version that gets the job done without all the bells and whistles. Sometimes you need a heavy duty truck for hauling large loads, or perhaps your needs require a large commercial rig for hauling huge loads for an extended period of time. He points out that “most residential heaters are not meant to be used daily, but rather three to four times a month for about four to seven years.” Recently, there has been a return to using heavier duty materials – steels, metals, etc. – which has allowed the heaters to operate more efficiently and last longer. “Commercial heaters can cost four to five times the amount of a residential heater,” Ted explains, “but it will probably last you twenty to thirty years instead of the average seven to eight.” Each pool owner’s requisites will vary, and for more details on what will fit your specific needs, please reach out to our client service professionals.

In terms of freezing weather procedures to follow, Ted explains that many times common sense will lead you in the right direction. “When we are forecasted to have one day of cold weather following a string of days in the 50′s, you know the radiant heat will keep the ground warmer than the air temperature and therefore, there should be no cause for immediate alarm. However, when we experience extreme freezing conditions when the air temperature doesn’t reach above 32° for four to seven days, then you will need to follow the necessary freezing weather procedures.” Ted also points out that the location of your equipment can have an impact as well. If it is positioned on the northern side with no protection from the elements, then you may think about taking extra precautions to prevent freezing in your pool during the winter.

If you are currently looking for a heater for your pool, we suggest you explore the options from Pentair and Raypak. However, brands do not necessarily matter so much as picking out a heater that will best suit your needs. Please do not hesitate to reach out to the professionals at Pool Environments to determine the best fit for your pool. Also, if you have questions about maintenance during winter months, be sure to take a look at our Pool Environments Service Manual.

Winter Weather – How To Prepare Your Pool

As we prepare for lower temperatures in the North Texas area, Pool Environments would like to take a moment to remind you of cold weather preparations for your swimming pool to keep it running smoothly this winter. You may also consider taking advantage of the Platinum Service program offered by Pool Environments to ensure your pool is receiving the maintenance it requires every six months.

  • Make certain your freeze guard is functioning properly, and that the pump is running when the temperature drops below 38°.
  • Make certain your water feature pumps are either running or winterized.
  • You may see a lot of evaporation during the cold weather, so keep an eye on the water level and do not let it drop below the center of the tile.
  • If, for some reason, your equipment shuts down, contact our service department immediately. Then, drop something like a tennis ball, or an empty milk jug inside each skimmer to allow for expansion in case the water freezes.
  • Please use caution around the pool area – watch for icy patches on the pool deck.
  • You may want to adjust your clocks or computer controller to run the normal filtration cycle at night, rather than during the day. This will allow the pumps to shut down in the warmer afternoon hours, and cut back on equipment run-time, saving energy.
  • For winterizing details refer to your service manual, contact your weekly maintenance company or contact our service department.

As always, please do not hesitate to call with any questions or concerns!

All recipients are members of the APSP, and most are certified service and building professionals through the Association. “The AOE winners represent the best of the best in craftsmanship and are an inspiration to all in the industry,” said APSP President and CEO Bill Weber in a press release for the event. The APSP is the largest international trade association representing over 4,500 member companies in the swimming pool and spa industry.

Pool Environments received bronze level recognition for projects in the pool renovation and commercial water feature categories. Silver level recognition was awarded to a local residence project in the natural material category, and gold level recognition was received in the 600 square feet or less traditional pool and commercial water feature categories. This commercial water feature was also completed for the Christ United Methodist Church of Plano, and the traditional project was for a local residence.
